![]() Just this morning, by way of acknowledgment of Downie’s passing, a Canadian TV writer on Twitter posted, simply, a stanza from the Hip song “Another Midnight”: “Perhaps we’re an election day / Pumping hands and kissing all the babies / Ain’t no time for shadowed doubts or maybes / Is there another way? / Or we’re a stolen Cadillac / Racing for a roadblock in the distance / Flashing by a lifetime in an instance / Can we take it back?”įor my money, Downie’s greatest lyrical achievement - and one of the greatest ever, anywhere - is the 1993 song “Fifty Mission Cap.” The song is built around the story of Maple Leafs defenseman Bill Barilko, who disappeared without a trace on a fishing trip, only to be found dead 11 years later in the Canadian wild, the victim of a plane crash. It’s hard to call him the greatest lyricist Canada’s ever produced, given that country also gave the world Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, but he’s in their company, which says enough. They didn’t, and Canada didn’t, and I’m confident both are happier for it to this day.īut back to Downie. audience and part of me worried that they would - and Canada would lose them for good. Part of me feared the Hip would fail to charm this captive U.S. I watched that episode with a combination of pride, trepidation, and dread. I remember vividly an appearance by the Hip on Saturday Night Live in 1995 - the show was hosted by Dan Aykroyd, a Canadian who had passed through the international membrane and who, legend goes, advocated to Lorne Michaels (another osmotic Canadian) to invite the band to appear. In this, they also felt quintessentially Canadian - that cloying suspicion that something is not quite validated until it’s earned the approval not just of Canadians but of fans south of the border as well. The Hip are big in Canada, which sounds a bit like a lame joke, but it means that Downie always belonged peculiarly, and uniquely, to Canada.įor a long time, the book on the Hip was that, unlike Joni Mitchell or Neil Young or, God help us, Nickelback, they couldn’t quite break through in the States. Try to imagine Stipe if Stipe was beloved in every corner of this country, red state and blue, but practically nowhere else around the world. But that doesn’t quite get it - and by “doesn’t quite,” I mean, not at all. If you don’t know him, a comparison is hard to conjure: My mind goes first to Michael Stipe, because Downie was a similar brand of weirdo poet, an off-kilter stage presence, and a famously awkward dancer. ![]() Even as a nonfan of the music - and these are songs that now rank with the national anthem on evergreen playlists of Canadiana - I respected, and even revered, Downie. They were, in the parlance, hosers - unabashedly Canadian and, ironically, not particularly hip, nor particularly interested in being hip.īut Downie. I liked a few songs, I loved one song in particular, but in general I always found them to be a little too bar-band for me, not as edgy or alternative as their Stateside grunge counterparts, or even other emerging Canadian bands of the era like Sloan. I can’t go any further without confessing: Back then, I was not a huge Tragically Hip fan. In their later years, they graduated into a kind of venerated touring ensemble, sort of like the Grateful Dead, but the apex of their impact was in the early ’90s. The Hip (they are only and always referred to in Canada as the Hip) formed in Kingston, Ontario, in 1984. ![]() Downie, who died last night at 53 after a protracted and public bout with brain cancer, was the lead singer of the Tragically Hip, a band that is iconic in Canada and mostly known outside of Canada for being iconic in Canada. It may seem hyperbolic to say that no non-Canadian can truly understand the importance of Gord Downie, because it is, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hello and Welcome to DarkPhantom's trophy shop. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hence “minimal techno,” a sub-genre, emerged in the ‘90s (again, primarily in Germany) in the form of stripped-down records by producers such as Richie Hawtin.īy now, one can find minimal jazz, minimal house and minimal classical, and electronic production techniques and conventions are dominant in mainstream music. Here, the music is reinvented, minus that bloat of progrock or the more expressive, emotion-laden tropes of folk and nascent hip hop. Most importantly, such music was unadorned, a sonic equivalent to Le Corbusier’s streamlined machines for living or the de Stijl group’s return to elementary parts. Its basic components were layered but remained identifiable.Įarly electronic music tended to pioneer it own aesthetic, and its production (especially the machines used to make it) were foregrounded rather than used as a means to a larger end, such as a pop narrative/allegory or orchestral accompaniment. It relied on the intermediary of the machine and invited immersion over time or movement of the body. Early ambient work by Brian Eno, Steve Reich’s calibrated hand claps or the pulsing, chirping krautrock of Kraftwerk and others attempted to erase the hand of the artist (like Donald Judd’s untitled cubes), while also calling attention to the work or the sound at hand with no reference to tradition, narrative or conventional pathos. On the other hand, almost from the outset, minimalist as a descriptor started to seep into to other realms, from spare interior design (perhaps influenced by the “zen-like” simplicity of like Robert Rauschenberg’s open expanses of white) to deconstructed haute couture to entire genres of music.Įlectronic music may have the most legitimate claim to the mantle of minimalism, borne as it was of the industrial/digital confluence of the ‘60s and heir to the cool, repetitive and relatively anonymous contours of late modernist sculpture. ![]() If you read my previous post, you know that the term “minimalism” is at risk of becoming unmoored from its avant-garde origins in the ‘60s. The former’s “Picasso Baby” compares his abode to the Tate and the Louvre, while the latter has declared his allegiance to modernist architecture, albeit by way of calling himself a minimalist. But while the helmeted Frenchmen have abandoned West in favor of a more retro feel, both Hova and ‘Ye have loudly embraced European high culture. In this summer of Kanye West, Jay Z and Daft Punk, it’s starting to feel like 2007 again. ![]() ![]() Parchment and vellum are extremely long-lasting and it was only in 2017 that MPs decided to stop writing the UK’s laws on it. The pegs holding the skin to the frame would be tightened gradually so that the skin was stretched thinner until it was smooth and shiny and blemish-free, and ready to be written on. ![]() If the hole was too small to be sewn, it was left and some scribes made use of them in tiny illustrations on the page. Despite this, small holes could appear in the skin and they would be sewn up, sometimes in a decorative manner and sometimes in a discreet manner. The knife was curved rather than pointed to reduce the risk of nicking the skin. The skin couldn’t be allowed to dry out during this stage. Once the hairs were removed the skin was stretched on a frame and scraped with a curved knife to create the correct surface for writing. The tanning vats were near a stream, as the hides were washed in water as well as soaked in urine. By the time that these vats were built abbeys were required to lease their tanneries to laymen, but in the fourteenth century it would have been the monks themselves, or, more likely, their servants, who carried out the tanning process, although there were also professional parchment makers outside the monasteries. They were built in an unused area of the monastic complex, because the smell produced by soaking animal skins in urine was horrendous. The tanning vats above were built in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, when the number of monks at Rievaulx had fallen considerably. Most vellum and parchment was produced in monasteries. Essentially the skin started to rot in the urine and the hairs fell out. The next step was to soak it in urine or lie to remove the hair. The skin would be left in running water for a couple of days to get rid of most of the unwanted elements. When the skin came off it would have been covered with hair or wool, bits of muscle, blood and fat, none of which was desirable in the finished product. If the animal had received an injury that scarred its skin, it reduced the value of the skin itself, even if the scar had healed. The fewer blemishes the skin had the better. With no electric lighting available, it must have been a task for bright days, no matter how many times you’d done it before. This is the bit that makes me most queasy, but I have nothing but admiration for the men who were able to skin an animal without putting a hole in the skin, particularly given the very basic nature of the tools involved. It was both time-consuming and smelly.Īll stages of the process required great skill to avoid damaging the skin. For both products the process was the same. Over the centuries, however, vellum has come to mean a high-quality product, regardless of the type of animal skin used. The latter was the more expensive of the two. Parchment used sheep and goatskin, while vellum was made of calfskin. For the moment, though, books were handwritten on parchment and vellum. Its time would, of course, come with the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century. As most things did, it entered Europe via Muslim Spain, but it still hadn’t made its presence felt in northern Europe by the end of the thirteenth century. It was probably first used for writing in the third century and this spread eventually to the Muslim world. By the ninth century it was used for fans, umbrellas, kites, lanterns, playing cards, toilet paper and paper money. It had been invented in China over two thousand years ago, where it was originally used for wrapping. I said that paper was known but little used in fourteenth-century England. As a vegetarian I’m not thrilled by the idea of investigating how animal skins were turned into the perfect writing surface, but the maker in me is fascinated by the process and the great skill of those involved in it. ![]() Last week I briefly mentioned paper and vellum and I thought it might be interesting to look at these in a bit more detail. ![]() |
